You can't keep every drop off the ground, so the strategy is to make sure anything that reaches a plant is heavily diluted with plain water. That comes down to three habits.

1. Pre-wet everything in the splash zone

Before any solution is mixed, every bed, shrub, tree, and section of grass near a downspout or drip edge gets soaked with plain water. Wet foliage and wet soil don't absorb the solution the way dry ones do — the water already in place dilutes what lands.

2. Keep it wet the whole time

3. Rinse thoroughly at the end

• Covering small or fragile plants that sit directly in the runoff path
